Robert Saleh has finally seen enough of Zach Wilson.
The Jets are benching the third-year quarterback for Tim Boyle for Friday’s game against the Dolphins, NFL Network reported Monday afternoon.
Wilson was removed Sunday late in the third quarter in the middle of another disastrous performance in the Jets’ 32-6 loss to the Bills.
Boyle came off the bench to complete 7-of-14 passes for 33 yards with an interception.
After backing up Aaron Rodgers on the Packers his first three seasons in the league, Boyle signed with the Jets this offseason.
Boyle, 29, moved from third string to backup when Rodgers tore his Achilles on the Jets’ first offensive series of the season.
The Jets signed Trevor Siemian in late September to add more veteran depth behind Wilson.
Siemian, 31, has far more playing experience than Boyle as he was the primary starter for the Broncos in 2016 and 2017.
Saleh had defended Wilson all season, but was noncommittal following the ugly defeat in Buffalo that saw the Jets drop to 4-6.
“Frustrated, but I get it,” Wilson said of Saleh’s decision to sit him in the third quarter. “Gotta score, gotta be in games. When it’s consecutive weeks of just doing nothing on offense, you can sit here and say last week we moved the ball, but we’re not scoring. Essentially it comes down to you’ve got to score points. When things aren’t getting done, change has got to be made and I understand that.”
The Jets benched Wilson last season twice for Mike White as he struggled in his second season.
There had been signs of promise, most notably in a 23-20 Week 4 loss to the Chiefs, and then there was a 20-14 upset of the Eagles in Week 6.
But the former No. 2 pick did not build off those performances and now Wilson may have seen his final snap with the franchise.
