In an age of culture wars and a divided USA, some political commentators warn of a possible future Civil War.

The last time this happened was during Abraham Lincoln’s presidency in the 1860s, when the Southern states seceded from the Union over slavery.

Now Ex Machina and Annihilation writer-director Alex Garland imagines a Second American Civil War set in the near future. But what will it be over this time?

Civil War’s first action-packed trailer arrived today starring Kirsten Dunst opposite Nick Offerman’s President of the United States.

Speaking previously with The Telegraph, Garland said of the movie: “[It’s] set at an indeterminate point in the future – just far enough ahead for me to add a conceit – and serves as a sci-fi allegory for our currently polarised predicament.”

Civil War hits cinemas on April 26, 2024.
