The 2024 BAFTA Film Awards have been a night to remember, with biopic Oppenheimer taking home seven awards. This year’s host was David Tennant, who took over from last year’s presenters Alison Hammond and Richard E. Grant.
The evening also featured performances from Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Hannah Waddingham. However, film fans were left furious as smash hit movie Barbie didn’t take home any awards, despite being nominated for five gongs; Best Actress for Margot Robbie, Best Supporting Actor for Ryan Gosling, alongside nods for Best Original Screenplay, Best Costume and Best Production Design.
One person fumed on X (formerly Twitter): “Something doesn’t sit right with me that the highest grossing movie of 2023, the 14th of all time and the catalyst to barbenheimer that definitely drove an increase in people to watch Oppenheimer too … Got nothing. Absolutely zero. Like what?… Justice for Barbie.”
Another commented: “Are we ignoring #Barbie because we’re snobs or because it’s mainly women? #BAFTAs #BarbieIsMyWinner.” “#BAFTAs shocked that Barbie received nothing considering it was like the film of the year?” A third fan exclaimed.
A fourth complained: “Nothing at all for Barbie? It was hands down the best movie! F*** you #BAFTAs.” A fifth fan agreed: “barbie ROBBED twice this is the whole meaning of the b****y film.”
Barbie stars Gosling and Robbie both graced the red carpet, alongside Cillian Murphy and Barry Keoghan, who were both nominated for Best Actor for their roles in Oppenheimer and Saltburn.
Nominations for the biggest categories included Fantasia Barrino for The Color Purple, Sandra Huller for Anatomy of a Fall, Carey Mulligan for Maestro, Vivian Oparah for Rye Lane, Margot Robbie for Barbie, and Emma Stone for Poor Things in the Best Leading Actress category.
In the Best Leading Actor category, Bradley Cooper was nominated for Maestro, Colman Domingo for Rustin, Paul Giamatti for The Holdovers, Keoghan for Saltburn, Cillian Murphy for Oppenheimer, and Teo Yoo for Past Lives. The films Anatomy of a Fall, The Holdovers, Killers of the Flower Moon, Oppenheimer and Poor Things were all up for Best Film.
Oppenheimer scooped up seven awards in total, including Best Director for Christopher Nolan. He expressed his gratitude to everyone for supporting such a dark project. When Murphy received his Best Leading Actor award, he praised Nolan and Emma Thomas as the “most dynamic, kindest producer-director partnership in Hollywood.”
