Last year, Jeanne du Barry opened the Cannes Film Festival and now the new film starring Johnny Depp is finally set to release in the UK and Ireland.
The latest trailer has arrived this week promising a scandalous tale.
The historical drama’s official synopsis reads: “Jeanne du Barry follows Jeanne Vaubernier (Maïwenn), a woman born into poverty who uses her intellect and charms to climb the social ladder, rising to the opulent court of King Louis XV of France (Johnny Depp).
“On her official introduction to the King, their attraction is irresistible and Jeanne becomes his favourite courtesan, reigniting his appetite for life.
“The two fall madly in love and against all convention, Jeanne moves into the Palace of Versailles as scandal and revolution ensue. Starring Johnny Depp, with Maïwenn, who also directs and co-writes.”
Jeanne du Barry is a French-language movie that includes Depp speaking in the Parisian dialect. The monarch he plays reigned over France from 1715-1774.
King Louis XV “The Beloved” succeeded his great-grandfather Louis XIV (the longest-reigning monarch in history) at the age of five. Louis XV’s reign is criticised by historians for his corruption and wars that drained the French treasury for little gain.
The King was succeeded by his grandson, Louis XVI, who was executed by guillotine during the French Revolution.
Jeanne Du Barry hits UK and Irish cinemas on April 19, 2024.
