Astros vs. Rangers pick
The American League Championship Series shifts to the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex when the Texas Rangers host the Houston Astros in Game 3 tonight.
BetMGM Sportsbook is listing the over/under for this game at nine runs, and that feels just a bit too high given tonight’s starting pitchers. Houston’s Cristian Javier has been great in the playoffs and Max Scherzer is a proven postseason pitcher.
Scherzer, 39, was placed on the injured list in mid-September with a right shoulder strain, but he has recovered quickly enough for Texas to feel comfortable starting him tonight. The veteran right-hander has a 3.58 ERA in 27 playoff games dating back to 2011, so he’ll be ready for the moment. He was also good in the regular season with a 3.77 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP.
Javier was excellent in his one playoff start this year. He gave up one hit and struck out nine over five scoreless innings in Game 3 of the ALDS against the Minnesota Twins, which put Houston in control of that series. While his regular-season ERA of 4.56 is okay, he pitched six scoreless innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks in the regular season finale and pitched well in the month of September.
