Two months ago, Mets officials were beginning the crunch to finalize the Opening Day roster. Two months from today they could very well be ready to start dismantling what has been assembled.

The nature of the postseason, with three third wild card spots in each league, dictates that all but the most elite and obviously dreadful teams walk a tightrope. The Mets are probably somewhere in the middle group.

It doesn’t change the fact the Mets have pieces that could appeal to a team looking to improve its World Series odds.

We’ll leave Pete Alonso aside here, because that is a decision in which emotion — given the first baseman’s DNA within the organization and popularity — will weigh heavily in what path is taken before he reaches free agency this offseason.
