Deezer has introduced Remix Lab, a new in-app feature that allows users to create and share remixes of popular tracks while ensuring artists and rightsholders are compensated for every stream. The feature is launching first in France and is currently accessible through Deezer Club. The company says a wider rollout is planned in the near future.
What Is Remix Lab?
Remix Lab is built around remix contests hosted directly within the Deezer app. Users can access active contests through Deezer Club or participating artists’ pages, where they can create their own versions of selected tracks using built-in remixing tools. Once completed, remixes can be streamed immediately, added to playlists and shared with the Deezer community, remaining exclusive to the platform. During the initial rollout, winning remixes will be featured in a dedicated Deezer playlist. Winners will also receive two tickets to a Deezer Purple Door event taking place in September, along with artist merchandise.
Artist Compensation and Rights
According to Deezer, the artists participating in Remix Lab have given their explicit approval for their music to be used. The company says every remix stream is attributed to the original recording, ensuring artists and rightsholders receive royalties in line with existing licensing agreements. “Every listen counts, and artists are compensated accordingly, in line with the rights owed to them,” Deezer said. Unlike Spotify’s recently launched AI-powered remix feature developed with Universal Music Group, Deezer says Remix Lab does not rely on generative AI. Instead, users manually modify tracks using built-in effects and transformations.
“This feature focuses on simplicity and accessibility,” said Pierre Trochu, Head of Product at Deezer. “In just a few clicks, users can reimagine and rediscover a track they already know and love.” Deezer CEO Alexis Lanternier added that the feature is designed to deepen fan engagement while “fully respecting rights, and maximising earnings for each track.”
