Apple has released Logic Pro 12.3 for Mac and iPad, bringing expanded tools to Beat Breaker, new granular synthesis capabilities across Alchemy and Sample Alchemy, improvements to Flex and Chord ID, and a range of smaller workflow additions. The update is available now as a free update through the Mac App Store.
Beat Breaker gets three new edit modes
Beat Breaker, Logic Pro’s rhythmic effects processor, gains three new edit modes: Cutoff, Resonance, and Pan. Cutoff applies lowpass or highpass filtering to individual slices, Resonance adds tonal character around the cutoff point, and Pan positions each slice in the stereo field independently.
A Randomize button is also new, letting producers generate random values for a single edit mode or multiple modes at once. Probability and amount settings can be adjusted independently for each mode, giving a way to introduce controlled variation into rhythmic patterns without losing intentionality.
Granular sync in Alchemy and Sample Alchemy
Alchemy and Sample Alchemy both receive a new Sync mode for their granular synthesis modules. The mode lets producers adjust the formants of generated grains and add parallel grain streams, opening up a wider range of sonic timbres and textures from granular sources.
A new Granular Alchemy sound pack is available to download from the Logic Pro Sound Library, putting both features into practice with ready-made patches and loops. A new demo project, ‘Shoulda Never’ by the Grammy award-winning team of Kehlani, Usher and Khris Riddick-Tynes, is also now available from the Sound Library.
Flex and Chord ID updates
The region controls for Flex have been revised to improve workflow flexibility. Audio regions in the Region inspector now include a dedicated Flex checkbox, a Smart Tempo pop-up menu, and a File Tempo field, with new options also added to the Smart Tempo project settings. Loop detection has also been enhanced: when Logic detects an imported audio file as a loop, it sets the file tempo to a constant value and places the file start on a downbeat automatically.
Chord ID, Logic’s AI-powered harmonic analysis tool, has seen performance improvements for both single instruments and full mixes. When the cycle area is active during analysis, only the chords in the portion of the region under the cycle area are added to the Chord track.
Other additions
- Logic Pro projects now include an audio preview as part of the Quick Look feature in Finder, letting producers hear a project before opening it.
- The Follow Tempo & Pitch parameter for Apple Loops has been split into separate Flex Time and Flex Pitch controls in the Region inspector, allowing independent control over each.
- A new Placement pop-up menu in the View settings lets users choose whether vertical grid lines appear on top of regions or behind them in the Tracks area.
- The slide mode for Bass Players in the Session Player Editor can now be changed to control how slide information is sent to external instruments and plugins.
- Logic Pro for Mac can now automatically adjust tempo events leading up to a video hit point to align audio precisely, aimed at post-production and sync workflows.
Logic Pro 12.3 is available now as a free update for existing subscribers on Mac and iPad.
