To make his point, T-Pain goes back to when streaming started. In 2015, nobody talked to artists or consulted them when setting royalty rates. Without warning or consent, music went from $1 per song on Apple Music to $0.003 per stream. With the cost of living going up every year, that per-stream rate is worth even less in real terms today than it was then.
The problem runs deep. Streaming platforms now account for the majority of how music is consumed, and any significant change to the payout structure would mean major disruption to the user experience. That makes it one of the harder problems to fix in the industry.
T-Pain says the current model makes it very difficult to build anything sustainable for his children — which is why he is not willing to leave their future in the hands of an industry that never asked artists what they thought in the first place.
