Alex Jones could scarcely hold back the blushes as she revealed her first job had involved dressing as a dolphin – and that she has photographic evidence. The One Show host hasn’t always had glamorous TV roles – and in fact, the Welsh beauty’s earliest career move was promoting tuna.
She began the story with the very ordinary-sounding admission that she’d worked in a department store. However, then Deborah intervened, saying she knew exactly what might be coming next.
Alex obligingly confessed of one cringeworthy moment in her role: “I was dressed as a dolphin promoting dolphin-friendly tuna!” Pointing at her, Deborah gloated: “I just outed you on that because you weren’t going to say that, were you?”
The shamefaced TV star shot back: “Thank you Deborah!” In response to requests for a picture to capture the epic moment, she made the shock confession that she’d be willing to show the moment off.
As an intrigued Deborah listened on, she admitted: “Alright, we can find one!” However, Alex wasn’t alone in sharing her awkward experience of her first step on the career ladder.
Deborah soon chimed in, confessing: “My first job was leading pony rides up and down the seafront – and I got paid nothing.”
She added: “I got paid in pennies, I think – but I got to ride the ponies!”
Alex revealed that in one of business mogul Deborah’s books, she’d spoken about several other celebrities and their humble beginnings.
“You say that Harry Styles’ first job was in a bakery and Taylor Swift in – you wouldn’t guess this, would you? A Christmas tree farm!” she marvelled.
Deborah took up the story, admitting: “She was picking preying mantis off the Christmas tree buds so that they didn’t hatch when people were having their Christmas dinner!”
Everyone in the room audibly gasped and laughed as they heard of Taylor’s distinctly unglamorous teenage journey.
Bloomberg and Forbes have since estimated her 2024 fortune at $1.1 billion – and while she’s not yet a billionaire in British money, she’s well on the way.
The One Show airs weekdays at 7pm on BBC One.
