Andrey Rublev is going to feel that in the morning.
The Russian tennis player became so enraged during his match at the ATP World Finals against Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz that Rublev viciously slammed his own racket into his leg in frustration, forcing play to be stopped on Wednesday.
Rublev had to receive medical attention for his bloodied knee after smashing the racket six times with such force into it.
The Russian began taking his frustrations out on himself after he had missed a shot that resulted in a service break during the second set.
Blood could be seen trickling down his leg as Rublev tried to wipe it with a towel before he eventually called a trainer over to look at it.
Rublev’s frustration had already started to mount in the first set when a point had been overturned and had to be replayed.
The 26-year-old eventually lost the match 7-5, 6-2.
“It’s OK,” Rublev told reporters about his knee, according to USA Today. “I get disappointed and couldn’t manage.”
The loss to the world No. 2 on Wednesday came after Rublev had fallen to Daniil Medvedev on Monday earlier in the group stage of the ATP World Finals being held in Turin, Italy.
The tournament is the ATP Tour’s season-ending event and Rublev had hoped to end on a better note.
“It’s not easy to take these defeats because I really wanted to finish the season well,” Rublev said, according to The Daily Mail. “Sometimes, when things don’t work out, it’s inevitable to be disappointed and today, I didn’t know how to handle it. No matter who I face, I never want to lose and even more so since the season is over and I haven’t been able to show the best of myself in this tournament.
“It’s very disappointing that I was not able to manage my frustration better.”
