October 2023 isn’t just treating you to the Eras Tour movie and Friday the 13th — a solar eclipse is also occurring and is slated to appear on Saturday (Oct. 14). Whether you’re a fan of the stars or just enjoy being outdoors, this major planetary event will be occurring throughout the day, and certain areas of the United States, Mexico and many countries throughout South and Central America will be able to witness the extraordinary view.

NASA states that the solar eclipse will begin in Oregon at 9:13 a.m. PT and will end in Texas at 12:03 p.m. CT. But, before you run outside to get a peek at the sky, you need to make sure you do so safely — and no, a pair of sunglasses will not suffice.

During a solar eclipse, the moon doesn’t fully cover the sun, which means looking at the sky without proper protection can do some serious damage to your eyes. That’s why NASA recommends wearing proper eye protection. You’ll know if a pair of solar eclipse glasses are NASA-approved if they have ISO certification (meaning the glasses meet the proper requirements that’ll keep your eyes safe and protected while you look at the sky).

Not sure where to find solar eclipse glasses? We found a few pairs that are ISO-certified (including a couple on Amazon that are eligible for Prime one-day free shipping). Not a Prime member? Click here to launch your 30-day free trial.
