Boards of Canada have announced a series of global listening sessions for their forthcoming album ‘Inferno’, set to take place across seven cities on May 22. Notably, the events land one week ahead of the record’s official May 29 release on Warp.
The seven host cities span four continents. Meanwhile, Tokyo, Berlin, Barcelona, London, Glasgow, New York and Los Angeles will all stage simultaneous listening parties. In turn, fans across multiple time zones get the chance to hear the full album together a week before street date.
Tickets go on sale May 1. Crucially, fans can register for the pre-sale ahead of the public on-sale window. Furthermore, demand looks set to outstrip supply given the duo’s notoriously low-frequency output and global cult fanbase.
‘Inferno’ marks the Scottish duo’s first studio album in 13 years. Equally, the project follows 2013’s ‘Tomorrow’s Harvest’ and stands as their fifth full-length. Mike Sandison and Marcus Eoin announced the record in late April after a month-long teasing campaign.
The rollout has matched the duo’s signature cryptic style. Still, mysterious teasers, viral-style poster campaigns and the surprise drop of new track ‘Tape 05’ have all built anticipation. The campaign culminated in a 42-second trailer previewing the new music.
The 18-track project arrives on red translucent 2xLP vinyl in a triple gatefold sleeve. Moreover, standard black vinyl, CD and digital editions all sit alongside it. The vinyl includes a 16-page booklet with the duo’s signature visual code.
Listening sessions sit inside a wider trend. Furthermore, artists like Fred again.. and others have built fan engagement through phone-free in-person experiences ahead of major releases. The Boards of Canada format extends that pattern to global scale.
