When Avicii shared his debut album, True, it was mere months after he was famously booed aggressively at Ultra Music when he debuted the tracks. Fortunately, he moved forward and delivered one of the most enduring collections of dance tracks ever released.
With the electornic music scene bursting into the mainstream, house and dubstep were the dominant genres at the time, but Avicii heard something new and different in the music. After achieving global success with hits like Levels and Fade Into Darkness, he pivoted to add a folksy, bluegrass influence for his debut album. Everyone knows that the lead single, Wake Me Up, took the world by storm, but the emotionally driven anthems spanned the entire release. One such hit was “Hey Brother,” which featured an equally legendary vocal performance by bluegrass singer/songwriter Dan Tyminski.
In a new interview, Tyminski discusses how he sang the vocals and reveals that he recorded it in Nashville and never actually met the Swedish producer. In the clip, he shares that he was given a single piano chord, a G, and a click track, and that was all he had to deliver the vocal over. Tyminski goes on to say how he was glad he didn’t hear the production til later, saying that he probably would have sung it differently had he known what Avicii was envisioning for the project. Over a decade later, Hey Brother continues to be a fan favorite, and it’s always exciting to get to listen to behind-the-scenes stories such as these.
