The signing by the Giants of veteran wide receiver Allen Robinson to a one-year deal has nothing to do with Darius Slayton’s unhappiness with his contract, coach Brian Daboll said.
Slayton, entering the final year of a two-year, $12.2 million contract, is seeking a new deal and not participating in the voluntary workout program.
Robinson, 30, has 562 receptions and 49 touchdowns in his 10-year NFL career.
He had 34 catches for 280 yards in 17 games in 2023 for the Steelers.
“Had a good workout,” Daboll said Friday after rookie mini-camp practice. “Has been a productive player for a while. We’ve had good conversations. Ended up choosing to come here. Happy to have him. We’ll throw him out there and see how he does.”
All three quarterbacks attending the mini-camp are participating on a tryout basis: Liam Thompson (Wabash), Ben Bryant (Northwestern) and Blake Stenstrom (Princeton).
The Giants earlier this week claimed QB Nathan Rourke off waivers but he is not at this camp.
Rourke, 25, played at Ohio University and for the British Columbia Lions in the CFL and has also spent time with the Jaguars and Patriots.
“Thought it was a good claim,” Daboll said. “Have another arm. Did some good stuff in the CFL and watched his stuff at Jacksonville, he was at the Patriots. Thought he was a good player to add.”
The Giants made official the hiring of Chris Snee as a senior scout.
He will be involved in both college and pro scouting.
Snee, 42, is a member of the team’s Ring of Honor and a two-time Super Bowl winner as a Pro Bowl guard.
He wanted to work for the Giants two years ago and had discussions with first-year general manager Joe Schoen but Snee, at the time, could not meet the time commitment component of what the job entailed.
“I had some things personally that I wanted to see through, so I couldn’t give the amount of time that was required,” Snee said.
With his children older and Snee no longer involved in youth coaching, the time was right for him to return to the franchise he spent a decade with as a player. Snee previously worked as a scout for the Jaguars and for the past two years as a football analyst for Boston College, his alma mater.
“I’m super excited about it,” Snee said. “I’m a Giant, and I always have been, despite having worn Jaguars clothes for four years when I scouted down there. Everyone knows my heart has always been here. This is where I feel like I belong and where I want to be, and I’m going to come in and work my tail off.”
The Giants made two other changes to their personnel department. Nick La Testa was promoted to assistant director of pro scouting and Charles Tisch is now the manager, football administration.
The Giants signed eight undrafted free agents: WR Ayir Asante (Wyoming), DB Alex Johnson (UCLA), WR John Jiles (West Florida), OT Marcellus Johnson (Missouri), DL Casey Rogers (Oregon), G Jake Kubas (North Dakota State) and DE Ovie Oghoufo (LSU). K Jude McAtamney (Rutgers) who does not count on the roster because he is an international player.
