Nick Knowles is “gutted” to have reached “the end of the road” on his BBC Strictly Come Dancing journey. The 62-year-old presenter has had a turbulant time while competing suffering multiple injuries and now facing his fate in the dreaded dance off.
The DIY SOS star and his professional dance partner, Luba Mushtuk, earned just 21 points from the judges after their eagerly anticipated Movie Week Charleston. They went head to head with Shayne Ward and Nancy Xu this evening in a bid to remain in the show for another week, but their final dance wasn’t enough to save them.
After hearing the verdict, and learning that he would be going home, Nick said: “I’ve really been surprised by how much I’ve loved doing it.”
He went on to explain: “Two things happen: one, is how much you care each week, and the other is how much you don’t want to let down your partner. The only reason I could do this this evening was because of Luba’s changes.”
After the show, he took to his Instagram account where he shared an emotional statement about his time on the BBC show. Sharing a picture of him and Luba smiling together in their dance costumes, Nick wrote: “Well that’s the end of the road for me on @bbcstrictly.
“But after the injury last week, getting back on the dance floor felt like a win in itself! Gutted I couldn’t stay longer to bring the amazing dances super talented @lubamushtuk had planned to life, but it’s been a fantastic journey.”
He continued: “Wishing the best of luck to all the competitors – they’re such a lovely bunch. It’s been a lot of fun, and a reminder that it’s never too late to try something new! Thank you so much to everyone for all their support.”
Luba posted her own message, writing: “I might not have another chance to be on the dance floor with you, @nickknowles, but I’ve had the honor of partnering with an incredible man and a brilliant student. Thank you for everything, but mostly thank you for being you.”
The future of the DIY expert on the show was uncertain ahead of Saturday’s live performance, as he was unsure if doctors would give him the green light to return to the dance floor.
His latest mishap resulted in him being on crutches and missing out on Movie Week last weekend, leading to his comeback with the Rain On The Roof routine from Paddington 2 with Luba last night.
Nick had also previously injured his shoulder away from rehearsals while simply changing a car tyre. Despite managing to push through that week’s dance, he was compelled to wear a sling for several training sessions.
Strictly Come Dancing returns next Saturday at 6.25pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
