I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! contestant Sam Thompson has opened up about his friendship with TOWIE star Pete Wicks in an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk. In a wider chat about his work with Boots, which sees him present The Locker Room series in a bid to get more men talking about their mental health, the TV personality spoke about how Pete has been a “reluctant shoulder to cry on” over the years.

The former Made In Chelsea star, who can often be seen making hilarious TikTok and Instagram videos with Pete, as well as his Strictly star girlfriend Zara McDermott, is set to meet Pete at the end of the Jungle Bridge when he completes his I’m A Celeb journey. Speaking ahead of his stint on the Australia-based ITV realty show, the Love Island podcast host opened up about his unlikely friendship with Pete.

Sam said: “He’s the kind of person that, if I’m having a problem, I’ll call him up first. I’ve always said I’m a vocal person; I talk a lot about my feelings.

“I suppose I’m the modern man,” Sam reflected. “More so than someone like Pete, you know. I have no problem opening up, while he’s just like my brother. As much as he can sit there and be like, ‘Arg, he annoys me’, he always listens to me. He will always give me the best advice.

Sam continued: “He’s the first person I call. I’ll call him before I call my sister and – yes, he’s always been a reluctant shoulder to cry on or to talk to – but you know he will always check in.”

“He has his own special way of doing it,” Sam added with a laugh, “But he will always check in.”

Sam’s girlfriend Zara, who was eliminated from BBC One’s Strictly Come Dancing a few weeks ago, can be seen filming hilarious dances with Pete while her boyfriend is away in Australia.

Speaking about the comedic videos he films with Pete and Zara on social media, Sam explained: “That’s another thing that helps my mental health for sure.

“I know it might sound really odd, but I love getting Pete down to film a video like the TikToks we do or something like that.

“I really enjoy it and it really helps my happiness to get Pete down from Essex and to have us all chilling out at my gaff and then going, ‘Right, we’re doing this dance’, and Pete not really wanting to do it…

“It’s incredibly funny to me,” Sam admitted. “You know, I think there’s a part of Pete that knows that I really enjoy it.

“And so I think that part of his gift to me is going, ‘Ugh, fine I’ll do this stupid dance if it’ll make you happy!’”

Sam has previously explained that Pete has travelled to Australia to support him in the jungle, as he was sweetly betting that his girlfriend Zara would still be on Strictly at the time she would have needed to fly out.

According to Ladbrokes, Sam is currently the front-runner to be crowned king of the jungle with odds of 8/13 – and Tony Bellew is not far behind him with odds of 3/1.
