According to a leaked eBay listing from music retailer Alto Music, Akai is set to launch its first portable sampler – The Akai MPC Sample. The MPC-series inspired portable sampler from Akai follows similar launches from Teenage Enginering, Casio and Wunderkammer.
Is the Akai MPC Sample a hardware sampler?
Basing the design off their iconic MPC60 and MPC3000 samplers, the new Akai MPC Sample is a SP-style hardware sampler. SP-style samplers like the notorious Roland SP-404MKII are known for their unique lo-fi sound and for being fun to play. These usually came without a screen or any sort of graphical interface, relying instead on color-coding and pads. However, some of the newer SP-samplers come with a LED display for the sake of simplicity.
What features does it have?
As for the Akai MPC Sample, it is rumored to come with 16 pads and a color screen. For recording, it comes with an in-built mic and a speaker. Moreover, the MPC Sample features a sampler engine, a sequencer, and an effects processor. The effects processor includes a granulator, a phaser, a chorus, a flanger, delay, reverb and more useful effects. It comes with over 100 kits routed to the pads for generating ideas straight off the hook. The workflow can be sped up using pads and knobs for effects.
As per the listing, the MPC Sample has a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, a microSD card slot, a sequencer and a USB-C connection. Reportedly priced at $399, there are currently no details as to when the sampler will be released.
