You can’t say that Steve Cohen isn’t willing to listen to the fans.
The Mets owner wasn’t afraid to hear out the fans at the team’s Port St. Lucie spring training facility when one yelled out to the head honcho.
“You gotta sign [Pete] Alonso!” a fan yelled out in a video posted on X by SNY.
Cohen, who is worth $19.8 billion according to Forbes, clearly heard the fan yell something before motioning to his ear since he could not hear exactly what was said.
“You gotta sign Alonso. You gotta sign him,” the fan repeated. “You know Alonso. Number 20.”
It wasn’t clear which fan made the comment to the Mets owner, but he continued to walk toward a group that was behind the batting cage and then engaged with one man wearing a great sweatshirt and blue Mets cap and others.
He then posed with the man and other fans for photos.
As for Alonso, the Mets and their star first baseman have not started talking contract extension yet.
Alonso has said that he wants to remain a Met for the extent of his career and he told reporters over the weekend that he “envisioned being a lifelong Met.”
“I have been sitting back and listening and the only contract matters that we talked about were my one-year contract this year,” Alonso told reporters at Clover Park on Saturday. “I am very happy I am back with this group and I am stoked to get this year going and it’s an exciting time in spring.”
He added that there was no deadline for contract talks between his representatives led by Scott Boras and the Mets.
“There’s no real standard — I am just sitting back and listening,” Alonso said. “There’s no pressure. But I can’t reiterate enough, my whole focus in spring training is to prepare so I can be best the version of myself during the season.”
