Miriam Margolyes detailed how her lodgers “make life sweeter” for her due to the absence of her partner Heather Sutherland, who lives in Amsterdam.

The 80-year-old star and her partner Heather have been together for over five decades, but still choose to live apart.

The Harry Potter actress spoke to Nick Grimshaw and Angela Hartnett about their living situation and long-distance relationship on hit podcast Dish from Waitrose.

“I am so lucky,” Miriam reflected during her chat with the podcast hosts. “I’ve got an intergenerational situation at home. I’ve got two lodgers.

“George was the second one that came,” she explained. “I had Emily come first, then George. He is a baker to die for. My favourite cake is coffee and walnut and he is brilliant at that.”

Asked by Nick how she met her lodgers, Miriam confirmed: “Emily is something to do with Doctor Who, I don’t quite know what.

“But I go to studios recording, and I have a great engineer whom I adore, called Rowan. He was a friend of theirs.

“They make my life sweeter,” she confessed. “Because my partner lives in Amsterdam, so I don’t see her very much, so I probably would get quite lonely if I was on my own all the time.”

Quizzed on how long she has lived in Amsterdam, Miriam revealed her partner had been there for around 50 years.

Sensing Nick’s astonishment, she reiterated: “Fifty-four years. And I really love her and I want to be with her and, now we’re getting old, we’ve got to try and find a way to be together.”

She then went on to confirm that she “tries” to spend a lot of time with Heather, with whom she also shares a house in Italy.

During the series four episode, Miriam also revealed she had previously turned down offers to appear on Strictly Come Dancing and I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here”.

She is currently promoting her book, Oh Miriam!, which promises to provide readers with “stories from an extraordinary life”.

Series 4 of Dish from Waitrose, hosted by Nick Grimshaw and Angela Hartnett, is available on all podcast providers now.
