In a bid to further ease the stress responses of each individual and their bodies reaction(s) when undergoing a surgical procedure, it has now become apparent that listening to music when under anesthesia could prove to be beneficial in more ways than none, as identified by a new peer-reviewed Indian study. Conducted by Delhi’s Maulana Azad Medical College and Lok Nayak Hospital, the research offers some of the strongest evidence yet on the matter, with results indicating that playing calming music to patients whilst under general anesthesia, can meaningfully improve the surgery, as well as reduce the amount of drugs required.
Focusing directly on adults undergoing laparoscopic gallbladder removal, researchers studied 56 patients and separated them into two groups. Although every patient wore noise-cancelling headphones, only one group actually listened to either soft flute or piano music during surgery. This factor proved significant, as the music influenced the brain while the patients remained unconscious, thanks to the auditory pathway that stays partly active. As a result, the team recorded the need for lower doses of propofol and fentanyl, more stable blood pressure, lower cortisol levels, clearer recovery post-operation, and overall, a reduced stress response across the body.
Supporting the idea that even under anesthesia the human brain can still register positive sensory input, music again demonstrated its impact, and when considering studies like this, it becomes easy to understand why it plays such a meaningful role in every individual’s life. Returning to this specific study and its findings, researchers illustrated how something as simple and cost-effective as music can help “humanise” operating rooms and enhance a patient’s wellbeing. With further research now planned for music-aided sedation, we can only be in awe of everything music continues to offer.
