It’s safe to say New England isn’t over Sunday’s blowout loss.
One day after the Patriots were humiliated at home by the Saints, 34-0, several fans vented their frustrations about the state of the team on Boston sports radio, with longtime coach Bill Belichick drawing much of the ire.
In a video posted Monday on X by the Funhouse account, callers unloaded on the Patriots while phoning into 98.5 The Sports Hub.
“The past few years have been terrible without [longtime quarterback Tom] Brady,” one caller seethed. “This team blows. [Current quarterback] Mac [Jones] has a noodle arm, the offensive line blows … it’s like Belichick’s stuck in his old ways and the game is catching up on him, and maybe it’s time for him to either retire or do something. This is pathetic.”
The hits kept coming for Belichick, who endured the worst home loss of his head coaching career Sunday.
“I really don’t think Belichick has ever been a good coach, all he is is a good defensive coordinator,” one fan said of the Super Bowl-winning coach, who won six titles in New England.
“Honestly, I hope next year that he goes to another team so I can root for him to fail and watch him fail like the human garbage piece of crap that he is. I am so tired of this guy, having to watch him ruin this team year in and year out.”
Since Brady departed the Patriots in 2020, Belichick has a record of 26-29 and zero playoff wins.
New England reached the postseason in the 2021 season, in what was Jones’ rookie year, before it was blanked by the Bills in the Wild Card round.
Although the offense floundered last year under the direction of Matt Patricia and Joe Judge, the return of former offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien sparked hope that things could potentially improve.
Fast-forward to Week 5 and the Patriots sit at 1-4 and have the league’s lowest-scoring offense.
Jones, the 15th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, has thrown five touchdowns against six interceptions.
In light of the team’s spiral, four anonymous NFL execs spoke to The Athletic about where the Patriots could potentially go from here and if those future plans should include Belichick.
“The transition from Brady to where they are at now is such an indictment,” one of the execs said. “Their best move is to bring in a young offensive coach with a new GM and start fresh. You let the new offensive coach determine whether Mac can be saved. They need real change. They gotta get out of this.”
The Patriots will visit the Raiders on Sunday before hosting the Bills on Oct. 22.
