Beyond the beauty of the Tulum region, it is unfortunately plagued by bouts of violence and murder. While the new municipal government had recently declared a halt to the violence, an incident outside of a Solomun event indicates otherwise.

Tulum has emerged as a beautiful tropical location and an exciting tourist destination for some of the world’s premier DJs and producers. Unfortunately, the region is also plagued by violence and murders, causing concern for government officials and those looking to visit the area. While a semblance of peace had occurred, and the new head of the municipal government, Diego Castañón, had confirmed this positive step forward, it seems that was all lost outside of the venue, Themplo. On January 8th, Solomun was headlining an exciting event at the center when gunshots could be heard just outside the premises.

Although the government remained silent regarding the incident for hours, attendees quickly took to Reddit to discuss their experience on the premises. One attendee wrote, “I was trying to leave the venue when we heard multiple gunshots, then minutes later saw armed police coming in.” The music continued as law enforcement arrived on the scene to assess the situation. Initial reports claim that a temporary male worker was the victim of the violence. FGE of Quintana Roo, the local law enforcement arm of the region, said, “As a main line of investigation, the Prosecutor’s Office is analyzing a possible link between the incident and drug-dealing activities, without ruling out other hypotheses.”

At this time, there have been no official statements from Themplo or Solomun, and news of the incident has been slow to arrive. We will provide updated details and information as they become available.
