A Channel 4 News presenter couldn’t resist a jibe at Rishi Sunak following his resignation as Prime Minister and Conservative party leader.
Sunak, 44, delivered his resignation speech from outside the iconic black door of No. 10 Downing Street on Friday (July 5). The Tories suffered their worst-ever election defeat as Labour came out victorious.
Keir Starmer‘s Labour won a 412-seat majority while the Conservatives secured only 121 seats. Sunak addressed the nation from outside his former residence while his wife, Akshata Murty, stood behind him.
Murty, 44, was spotted firmly gripping an umbrella as her husband spoke to the nation for the first time following his defeat. This was in stark contrast to when Sunak called for General Election and he became soaked under torrential rain, reports the Mirror.
Channel 4 News presenter Cathy Newman posted a photo of Murty holding the umbrella, adding the caption: “Taking no chances with the weather…”
In a similar vein, GB News star Christopher Hope remarked: “Rishi Sunak has learned his lesson! If the heavens open again as he speaks outside 10 Downing St, a man is ready with an umbrella.”
Sunak kicked off his resignation speech by apologising to the British public. He began: “To the country, I would like to say, first and foremost, I am sorry.
“I have given this job my all, but you have sent a clear signal that the government of the United Kingdom must change, and yours is the only judgement that matters.”
Sunak continued: “I have heard your anger, your disappointment, and I take responsibility for this loss. To all the Conservative candidates and campaigners who work tirelessly but without success, I’m sorry that we could not deliver what your efforts deserved.
“It pains me to think how many good colleagues who contributed so much to their communities and our country will now no longer sit in the House of Commons. I thank them for their hard work and their service.”
After confirming he would be stepping down as the Conservative party leader, Sunak said it was important that the Tories “rebuild” following 14 years in government.
