Strictly Come Dancing pro-Brendan Cole, who spent more than 13 years on the show before leaving in 2017, the same year as Bruce Forsyth’s death, has opened up with his views on the late TV host. The 48-year-old might have called him “incredible”, but he wasn’t afraid to add that there were times when he was “horrible to everybody”.
Speaking on ITV’s This Morning, the dance star suggested that he could be “temperamental”, while he always “commanded respect”. As Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley listened, transfixed, he continued: “He was incredible off the stage more so than he was on stage. His wit was so fast and so brilliant.
“He was lovely to everybody unless he was slightly angry, then he was horrible to everybody. He was very temperamental.” Rachel Riley, who met her husband on the show after signing up in 2013, could be seen seemingly looking slightly uncomfortable by Brendan’s very candid confessions as he sat beside her.
However, he then reminisced on a positive note: “What I loved was production would always say, ‘Bruce is on set, Bruce is on set!’ and I love that he commanded that respect and earned it over so many years.” He made his comments as the show paused for thought about the TV legend, who was a staple in British households before sadly dying of bronchial pneumonia in 2017.
Bruce had been famed for his hosting role on Generation Game, Price Is Right, and Play Your Cards Right.
The year after he died, his former Strictly co-host Tess Daly presented Sir Bruce: A Celebration in tribute to him.
Then, just months later, his ashes were finally laid to rest beneath the boards of the London Palladium, in honour of his entertainment business-focused life.
At the time, Tess offered a poignant tribute to him on Instagram, sharing in her statement: “There are no words to describe how heartbroken I am to be told the saddest news, that my dear friend Sir Bruce Forsyth has passed away.
“From the moment we met, Bruce and I did nothing but laugh our way through a decade of working together on Strictly Come Dancing and I will never forget his generosity, his brilliant sense of humour and his drive to entertain the audiences he so loved.”
She added sadly: “He has been there for me as a co-host, a mentor, but most importantly as a friend, and I’m extremely fortunate to have worked alongside the man who defined Saturday night entertainment for so many decades.
“He was a gentleman and a true legend and I will miss him deeply.”
In other Strictly news, pro-Giovanni Pernice’s shock decision to reportedly “quit” the show was announced yesterday, although both he and the BBC are yet to confirm this story.
