Darragh Ennis urged the public to “consider” their online comments after he lost a game on Tuesday.
The Chaser, otherwise known as The Menace, admitted he had been having a “bad day” but he was quickly inundated with messages of support.
In the show’s latest episode, host Bradley Walsh introduced four new contestants to the ITV studio. Greg from Merthyr Tydfil, Viv from London, Sadie from Port Glasgow and Charles from Essex were up against The Menace.
Despite Viv sadly being caught by The Chaser, the rest of the team made it to the final – and beat Darragh, meaning they walked away with thousands of pounds each.
After the show aired, Darragh took to X, formerly Twitter, where he addressed his performance, writing: “On tonight’s show, I had a bad few minutes. It got away from me and I started to miss the clues in the question. It happens, we all have bad days. I don’t mind, but maybe consider what you post online about people who are in the public eye, it can be damaging #TheChase.”
Social media users rushed to comment on the post, as one person commented: “Sorry you’ve been getting stick for that performance, you were very gracious in defeat. Hope you’re well Darragh.”
Another wrote: “Other Chasers have had a bad day at the office. Others have lost to a score of 11 before now! Have loved your journey from contestant to Chaser! Utmost respect to you!”
“Ignore the idiots, you’re still cleverer than 99% of them,” a third viewer wrote. Another added: “I think Darragh was under the weather could tell in his voice. Even chasers are allowed off days.”
A fifth said: “Very well said Darragh. Like you said we all have bad days. Don’t beat yourself up. I hate these flipping trolls, if they’re so clever why don’t they have a go on the show?”
Elsewhere, the quizzer recently revealed he often receives marriage proposals online.
He told The Mirror: “My wife finds it a bit weird but I think if I saw any of them in real life they’d panic. Everyone in real life is really nice because it’s not anonymous, so it’s hard to be weird in real life.
“People are really nice, really friendly. They just want a photograph and ask a few questions about the show.”
The Chase airs weekdays on ITV at 5pm.
