Todd McShay has petty beef with Tommy DeVito’s agent, Sean Stellato — but it has nothing to do with professional football.
McShay, the former ESPN NFL Draft guru and college football sideline reporter, appeared on Ryen Russillo’s podcast on The Ringer and explained that the two were once rivals in high school.
“Senior year in high school, we’re 7-0 and we’re going to play Salem, Massachusetts and if we win this game, we kinda know we’re going to win the last two games. If we win this game, we’re going to play in the Super Bowl,” McShay said, as covered by The Spun.
“We lose to this team in Salem. Sean Stellato is the quarterback. All week long it was like this big media frenzy because the Salem teachers, including their head coach, were on strike.”
As McShay recalled, the Salem head coach apparently crossed the picket line, presumably so he could coach in the big game.
“So they beat us in that game, and then we go on and win the next two games. We’re getting word from our play-by-play guy, it’s trickling down to the sidelines that Salem is losing to Beverly, this other town in Massachusetts,” McShay continued.
“If they lose this game, we’re going to the Super Bowl again. Dreams are back on.”
Clearly, there was a “but” coming.
“Sean Stellato throws a touchdown pass with like no time left, and they win that game,” McShay lamented.
“We’re shut out, season’s over, high school career is over, right? Fifteen years later. I get word from somebody that I know who’s talked to Stellato, he’s writing a book about it. Stellato wants to contact me to do an interview. I tell him to go f–k himself. OK? And I think it’s all going to go away. And I’m sitting on my couch a couple of weeks ago (watching) ‘Monday Night Football,’ and I look at this guy and I’m like holy s–t, that’s Sean Stellato. He won’t go away. He’s like this rodent that won’t go away in my life.”
McShay played quarterback for Swampscott High School and has seemingly been carrying this grudge for nearly 30 years.
Stellato has been in the news frequently since his client, DeVito, burst on the scene with the Giants, including having a back-and-forth tiff with the Manning brothers.
Last week on ESPN2’s “ManningCast” coverage of Packers-Giants, Eli purported to have sources that said Stellato’s nickname in high school was “Slimy,” and Stellato was offended by the insinuation.
This week on “ManningCast,” Peyton revisited the saga and issued a sarcastic apology.
Stellato was also involved in a dispute with a local New Jersey pizza restaurant, whose owner claimed that the agent doubled DeVito’s appearance fee and reneged on an agreement in principle.
DeVito nonetheless made an unpaid appearance at Coniglio’s Old Fashioned on Tuesday, as documented by The Post’s Ryan Dunleavy.
