Edwina Currie suggested she was “robbed” as the author gave an insight into her short-lived experience on the BBC show.

The former Conservative MP was partnered with Vincent Simone and revealed he was in tears when the dancing duo became the first pairing to waltz off the dancefloor on Strictly Come Dancing.

In a new interview, the politician shared her thoughts on whether it is right for contestants with dancing experience to be allowed to participate. She stated that having contestants with previous dance experience creates the “feeling that somebody is cheating”, and it is “unwise” to have such stars, because that is “simply not fair on everybody else”.

Speaking to Lord Ping on the eighth episode of the online video series Red or Black, the series nine contestant said: “We were robbed. My partner was Vincent Simone and he was really upset. He was in tears as the vote was announced.

“Personally, I was very relieved, because five weeks of learning to dance every single day is physically exhausting. Afterwards, I could barely walk and my feet were so sore, so I was quite glad to see us named. Having said that, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.”

The ex-Tory MP said she does see the issue with producers having celebrities with zero experience having to dance alongside other show contestants who have had some form of training.

She went on: “There’s a problem for Strictly producers, because if you only have people who can’t dance, although that can create a wonderful narrative arc if they learn, the odds are they won’t.

“Watching bad dancing is a pain, but if you start off with people who have had a bit of prior dance training, particularly on stage, they may be natural dancers who become really good at it.

“There is that feeling that somebody is cheating here, even though they’re not because they have to work hard to reach that high standard. So there is a balance to be achieved.”

“I think in the end the producers are unwise to have people who are dancers as their contestants, because that is simply not fair on everybody else,” she explained further. “On the other hand, I think it shows. And when the public gets an opportunity to vote, they will choose to vote them out.”

She added: “The best is somebody who loves music, has rhythm, doesn’t mind what they look like, brings real personality and charm and learns to dance as well.”

During Edwina’s time on the show, she received a low score of 19 from the judging panel and was voted out of the competition.

Meanwhile, Ellie Leach was crowned the Strictly winner during last week’s final as she beat Bobby Brazier and Layton Williams to lift the Glitterball.
