HBO is going to the Black Rock Desert. The premium network has just shared the first trailer for its four-part documentary series ‘The Man Will Burn’, an intimate behind-the-scenes look at Burning Man that will premiere on HBO Max on 9 July. Directed by Academy Award nominee Jehane Noujaim (‘The Square’) and filmmaker Vikram Gandhi (‘Kūmāré’), the series traces the festival’s evolution through “several consecutive years of unprecedented crises”.

The trailer, dropped on 3 July, features interviews and testimonies from long-time Burners and the community that brings the yearly Black Rock Desert event to life. According to the Tribeca Film Festival description, the series covers the pressures that have pushed Burning Man “to its limits” in recent years. That includes the well-documented financial troubles following the pandemic, when the festival’s CEO publicly asked fans for help raising 20 million dollars to keep it running.
Meanwhile, the doc will also revisit the infamous 2023 edition, when torrential rain trapped thousands of attendees in the desert for days. Last year’s edition saw its own tragedy, when 37-year-old Vadim Kruglov was found dead on site in a suspected homicide that is still under investigation. Together, those crises form the backdrop for the story HBO is now telling. Fans of Coachella-scale culture documentaries will find plenty to sink into here.
