Almost thirty years since their names last shared a release, BT and Sasha are back on the same record. Sasha’s remix of BT’s ‘Mercury & Solace’ is out now via Black Hole Recordings, and it is a proper generational moment for progressive trance. The pair haven’t linked on a release since 1997, when Sasha delivered his epic 12-minute take on BT’s ‘Remember’.
The story of how it happened is refreshingly simple. Sasha dropped BT a line last year and requested the parts. After giving it a first ID-revealing airing last autumn, the remix has been popping up on Sasha’s sets ever since, sparking feverish fan discussion around a proper release. That release lands today, with the bragging rights falling to Black Hole Recordings.
Originally released in 1999 on BT‘s Moments In Still Life album, ‘Mercury & Solace’ stands as one of Brian Transeau’s defining works, weaving filmic production, progressive trance textures and bleeding-edge FX into one enigmatically titled classic. Sasha’s rework locates its “fruit of life” vocal shamanics in the opening half, while cornering Jan Johnson’s dubbed-up, time-stretched “reach out for me” refrain in the second. Notably, he has drawn down the tempo, upped the b-line chug and swapped BT’s hi-hats for a funked-up perc roll, all of which expand its atmospheres no end. Fans of the wider Black Hole Recordings catalogue will find it slots right in.
