Edgehog, a new Australian hardware developer, has unveiled the EH-01 — a compact experimental sampler-synth currently taking pre-launch sign-ups on Kickstarter. Priced between US$179 and US$249, the instrument takes a no-screen, no-menu approach to sound design, with every function accessible directly through physical controls.

The EH-01 is described by Edgehog as a tool for “strange samples, rough rhythms, noise, loops, drums and fast hands-on control.” The physical interface consists of 10 large buttons and 13 knobs. There are no LEDs, screens, or preset menus — just direct access to the sound. “Just physical controls, playable buttons and direct access to the sound,” the Kickstarter page states.

It sits in a similar space to other compact experimental synthesizers that have emerged recently, but stands out for its distinctly rough-edged, cyberpunk aesthetic and emphasis on immediacy over menu navigation.

Sound engines

The EH-01 combines several sound generation modes in one unit. An eight-voice synth engine provides a real-time oscillator, ADSR envelope, and state-variable filter per voice, alongside LFO and controlled chaos modulation sources. A dual sample system handles internal recording and resynthesis, with looping and micro-loop textures via SD card streaming. Additional modes include a multimode sound generator, a drum machine, and a voice-style formant engine. Built-in effects cover chorus, reverb, and delay.

Controls and sequencer

The 13 knobs handle filter movement, pitch, timing, delay, chaos, and voice character, as well as sample banks, waveforms, pitch ranges, bitcrush depth, and filter tone. The 10 mechanical keys are designed for physical playing — tapping, holding, retriggering, and punching in quick patterns.

An offline Web MIDI console provides a deeper sequencing environment for music producers who want more control. This includes a 32-step sequencer with velocity, probability, pattern variations, smart mutate, motion sequencing, and per-step CC locks, as well as live sliders, MIDI clock, preset storage, pattern saving, scene recall, song chaining, scale controls, and an assignable XY pad.

Pricing and availability

The EH-01’s pre-launch Kickstarter page is live now, with no confirmed shipping date as yet. Edgehog’s website lists a price range of US$179 to US$249. The instrument also ships with 3D-printable part files for users who want to modify or customise the hardware casing.
