Former Lazy Town star Chloe Lang has opened up about the mistake she made in her audition that nearly cost her the role of Stephanie Splitz on the hit Icelandic children’s show. The 21-year-old actress shared an insight into how she was selected from thousands of children to play the iconic character in an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk.
Chloe, who graduated from Pace University in New York with a bachelor’s degree in Business just this year, started playing the pink-haired, optimistic Stephanie a decade ago. The popular TV series, which was created by Sportacus actor Magnus Scheving, often saw the pair team up for adventures.
Remembering her time on Lazy Town, which was formerly owned by Nickelodeon before being taken over by Warner Bros, Chloe spoke about landing the role and moving to Iceland when she was just 10 years old. Before her era of Lazy Town began in 2013, Julianna Rose Mauriello played Stephanie for the first two series from 2004 to 2006, so Chloe already had some pretty big shoes to fill.
Discussing the competitive casting process, she explained: “There was a very long hiatus between Juliana and my filming. And I’m not exactly sure the exact number of how many other girls they saw, but they did casting in New York, maybe California and a couple of other places.
“So it was definitely a couple of 1000 girls they saw,” Chloe revealed. “But I was, at that point, going into New York City regularly for auditions. I was 10.
The actress went on to recall her excitement at landing an audition for the Nordic children’s programme, saying: “I got a call from my manager explaining that I had an audition for this show called LazyTown.
“I hadn’t really watched it prior, but then I started looking it up and I was like, ‘Wow, this is such a cool show!’
“So I went to the audition and I prepared the lines they wanted me to do,” she continued. “They wanted us to sing and dance and it was good, because some auditions are very quick. You’re in and out usually, but I was in there for a good amount of time.”
Chloe then went on to share the story of how she very nearly missed out on her famous part after one part of her audition appeared to get “lost in translation.”
She said: “The funny story with my LazyTown audition is that – I guess it got lost in translation – I was supposed to have prepared the Bing Bang song.
The song Bing Bang (Time to Dance) is the number that closes out every episode of LazyTown.
“I didn’t know that, so I didn’t have that prepared when they asked me to do it!” Chloe remembered.
“And I was like, ‘Oh no!’ But we kind of made a joke out of it.”
Lucky for Chloe, show creator Magnus was still willing to give her another shot, with the actress explaining: “I left and Magnus was like, ‘We want you to come back. Can you go home tonight and learn the song and come back in tomorrow? We enjoyed your audition.’
“So I was like ‘sure’ and I went back in the next day, had another round and then a few weeks later, I got a call and I booked the job and it was time to move to Iceland!”
A decade on from her role as Stephanie, Chloe has starred in the short film, Charles Norton’s The Lost Weekend.
Speaking excitedly about the film, she said: “We’re now on our third film festival, and it’s been getting a lot of great feedback and a lot of great reviews.
“The director is actually working on making a feature film, so there are a lot of things in the works.”
Chloe also let slip she has just bagged another film role after auditioning last month.
“I’m excited to be back on set in November,” she admitted. “Everything takes a lot of time in this industry, which is why I’m just working hard and staying patient.”
